My aims for my classes:
- To be a source of positive thinking and discovery, especially about the human body and what it can do.
- To teach dance and movement as a practice.
- To teach musicality, rhythm, timing, interpretation, and making choices.
- To encourage people to carry what they learn into other areas of their lives.
Primarily, I teach a love of dance by sharing my belief that dance is one of the most nourishing and invigorating
of the exercise forms and truly a beautiful art form. In each class, I emphasize good posture and body alignment,
work on strengthening and toning all parts of the body - arms
to feet, teach belly dance technique (I teach a mixture of
styles – Egyptian, Turkish, and fusion), and introduce
the music and rhythms of the Middle East.
I teach and perform with zills (finger cymbals), veil, cane, fan, and sword. Beginner classes usually will involve veil, with the other props introduced once essentials are learned.
I love to perform, so some part of my class always includes instruction on building your confidence in your movement and developing body and self-love (belly dancing helps you learn to love the body you have!). Finally, if you are interested in belly dance as a form of exercise, you will be pleasantly surprised at how it works your entire body. It’s a great low-impact workout.
